What is going on

Most knees want loading, not rest.

Most knee pain, whether it is runner's knee, tendon pain around the kneecap, or mild arthritis, settles better with the right loading than with rest. The knee is built to be loaded, and backing off completely tends to leave it weaker and just as sore the moment you go back to stairs, squatting or running. The job is to find what the knee can tolerate now, calm the irritation, and build its capacity back from there.

Scans confuse people here too. Wear and tear and minor changes show up on the scans of plenty of pain-free knees, so a finding does not always explain your pain. We assess the knee itself and use imaging only when it will change the plan. A small number of presentations, such as a knee that truly locks, gives way, or swells up fast, get screened and referred on if needed.

How we treat it

Diagnosis, then progressive strength.

1

A real assessment and diagnosis

Your physiotherapist works out whether it is the kneecap, a tendon, the joint, or something referred from the hip driving the pain, and explains it in plain language. You leave knowing what the problem actually is.

2

Settle it and start moving

Hands-on treatment and the right early exercises to calm the irritation and get you loading the knee with more confidence, in the same first appointment where appropriate.

3

Rebuild the strength the knee needs

This is where our exercise physiologist takes over the strength side, loading the quads, hips and calves properly so the knee can handle stairs, squatting, running and sport. Physio and exercise physiology on one plan, one clinic.

4

Back to running, lifting and sport

Whether the goal is pain-free stairs, a return to running, or getting back on the mats, we progress the load to meet it and tell you honestly when the knee is ready.

Common Questions

Before you ask.

Do I need a scan?

Usually not to start. Scans of pain-free knees commonly show wear and tear, so imaging does not always explain your pain. We assess the knee properly and refer for imaging only when it will change the plan.

Should I rest it or load it?

Most knee pain responds better to the right loading than to rest. Complete rest tends to leave it weaker and just as sore. We settle the irritation, then rebuild the strength the knee needs.

Can I exercise with knee arthritis?

Yes, and it is one of the most effective things you can do for it. Structured, progressive exercise reduces pain and improves function in knee osteoarthritis, dosed to your knee and progressed under supervision.

Do I need a referral?

No, private patients can book directly. You only need paperwork for funded care, a GP care plan for Medicare rebates, or insurer approval for a workers compensation claim.

Can I claim on private health or Medicare?

Yes. Private health extras with HICAPS on the spot, Medicare rebates with a GP care plan, and WorkCover for work-related knee injuries.
