Most back pain is mechanical, not dangerous.
The large majority of lower back pain comes from how the joints, discs and muscles of your spine are loading and moving, not from something sinister. That is good news, because mechanical pain responds to the right movement and the right load. The problem is that "rest it and see" often lets it settle just enough to flare again the next time you bend, lift or sit too long.
A small number of back presentations do need more than physiotherapy. Part of a proper first appointment is screening for those red flags so you are not guessing, and referring you on quickly if imaging or a doctor is warranted. Most people never need that step. They need a clear answer and a plan.
Diagnosis, treatment, then strength.
A real assessment and diagnosis
Your physiotherapist tests how your back actually moves and loads, finds the positions and patterns driving the pain, and explains what is going on in plain language. You leave the first appointment knowing what the problem is, not just where it hurts.
Hands-on treatment from day one
Manual therapy and targeted exercise where it is appropriate, in the same appointment, to settle the pain and get you moving with more confidence. You do not leave with only a conversation.
A strength plan so it does not come back
This is where our two disciplines work together. Once the pain settles, our exercise physiologist builds the load back into your spine and hips properly, so the thing that keeps flaring stops flaring. Physio and exercise physiology on the same plan, one team, one clinic.

Before you ask.
Do I need a scan for my back pain?
Usually not. Most lower back pain is mechanical and does not show a clear cause on a scan, and scan findings often do not match the pain. We assess you properly, screen for the small number of red flags that do need imaging, and refer on if it is warranted.
Should I rest my back or keep moving?
Keep moving, within reason. Bed rest makes most back pain worse and slower to settle. We give you specific movements and loads that are safe to do now, and progress them as you improve.
Do I need a referral?
No, private patients can book directly. You only need paperwork for funded care: a GP care plan for Medicare rebates, or insurer approval for a workers compensation claim.
How long until it settles?
Most episodes improve within a few weeks with the right movement and loading. Persistent or recurring pain takes longer, and that is exactly where the strength side of our care matters. Your physiotherapist gives you a realistic timeframe after the assessment.
Can I claim on private health or Medicare?
Yes. Physiotherapy is claimable on most private health extras with HICAPS on the spot. Medicare rebates apply if your GP sets up a care plan. WorkCover is covered for work-related back injuries.
