What is going on

Most shoulders want loading, not rest.

The shoulder is built for movement, and most shoulder pain, including rotator cuff pain and impingement, settles better with the right loading than with rest. Resting it completely usually leaves the shoulder weak, stiff and just as sore when you go back to reaching, lifting or pressing overhead. The job is to find what the shoulder can tolerate now, calm the irritation, and build capacity back up from there.

Scans confuse a lot of people here. Rotator cuff changes show up on the scans of plenty of pain-free shoulders, so a finding on imaging does not always explain your pain. We assess the shoulder itself and use imaging only when it will actually change the plan.

How we treat it

Diagnosis, then progressive loading.

1

A real assessment and diagnosis

Your physiotherapist works out whether it is the rotator cuff, the joint, the shoulder blade, stiffness or instability driving the pain, and explains it in plain language. You leave knowing what the problem actually is.

2

Settle it and start moving

Hands-on treatment and the right early exercises to calm the irritation and restore movement, in the same first appointment where appropriate.

3

Rebuild the cuff and shoulder blade

This is where our exercise physiologist takes over the strength side, loading the rotator cuff and shoulder blade properly so the shoulder can handle overhead and pressing again. Physio and exercise physiology on one plan, one clinic.

4

Back overhead, lifting and pressing

Whether the goal is reaching a top shelf without a twinge, returning to the bench press, or getting back on the mats, we progress the load to meet it and tell you honestly when the shoulder is ready.

Common Questions

Before you ask.

Do I need a scan?

Usually not to start. Scans of pain-free shoulders often show rotator cuff changes, so imaging does not always explain your pain. We assess the shoulder properly and refer for imaging only when it will change the plan.

Should I rest it or load it?

Most shoulder pain responds better to the right loading than to rest. Complete rest tends to leave it weak and stiff. We settle the irritation, then build the cuff and shoulder blade back up under guidance.

How long does frozen shoulder take?

It runs in stages and can take many months to fully resolve, but the right physiotherapy keeps you moving, manages pain, and maintains as much range and strength as possible through each stage.

Do I need a referral?

No, private patients can book directly. You only need paperwork for funded care, a GP care plan for Medicare rebates, or insurer approval for a workers compensation claim.

Can I claim on private health or Medicare?

Yes. Private health extras with HICAPS on the spot, Medicare rebates with a GP care plan, and WorkCover for work-related shoulder injuries.
